Can volcanic eruptions affect the climate?

Image
Explosive eruptions can cause substantial cooling of global surface temperatures, lasting for anywhere between 1 to 10 years. We have known about this cooling for centuries, with our temperature records often showing distinct dips following major eruptions. One of the clearest examples of this was the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora , an explosive event that caused a 1°C drop in global land temperatures. The eruption was so energetic that volcanic gases were injected into the stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere 10 to 50km above the surface. This caused incoming sunlight to be blocked, meaning that not as much reached the Earth’s surface. While more explosive volcanoes tend to cause more global cooling, it’s not always the case. It depends on the ejected gases reaching the stratosphere, and on wind systems. Mount St Helens , one of the most violent eruptions of modern time, hardly made a dent in global temperatures due to...

How to handle a defensive personality, according to a psychologist

Image
As flawed beings with fragile egos making our way in a hostile, unpredictable world, psychologists have long recognised that we cope by deploying psychological defences . These often take the form of self-serving cognitive biases. For instance, we’re prone to the ‘better-than-average’ effect, whereby we think we’re better than most others at various skills from driving to maths ; or we’ll tend to attribute other people’s successes to good luck, while seeing our own good results as a sign of innate talent. Getting defensive when we’re criticised, or when we make a mistake, is yet another of these self-protective mechanisms. As the politicians so often say: “mistakes were made, but not by me”. So, when you give someone negative feedback or you criticise them or their beliefs, you are – perhaps unwittingly – threatening their psychological defences. By forcing them to recognise how they’ve erred, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as a shame, guilt o...

What’s the difference between wave energy and tidal energy?

Image
You may have learned at school that the ocean’s tides are caused by the Moon’s gravitational force pulling water towards it as it orbits the Earth, while waves are caused by wind blowing across the ocean’s surface. All that movement means ocean waters contain a huge amount of kinetic energy. Tidal energy can be harnessed using underwater turbines, which are similar to wind turbines but with shorter, stronger blades. Water flowing through the turbine turns the blades, which turns a generator, producing electricity. Tidal turbines work best in narrow passages of water, which naturally channel tidal energy through the turbines. For example, one of the world’s largest collections of tidal turbines can be found between the Scottish mainland and the Island of Stroma, capturing the tides flowing between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Another approach is to use natural or artificial barriers to trap water at high tide and redirect the flow through turbine-filled channels as the ...
